There is nothing more impressive than a powerful thunderstorm as it fills the sky with lightning, it
showers the earth with heavy rain, and it bends the trees with its furious wind. Unfortunately, there
are dark and powerful storms that eventually threaten each of our lives. Whether it is the death of a
loved one, the loss of our health, the loss of our finances, a senseless tragedy, or the consequences
of our own sin, we all must face various storms in our lives. Some of these storms are so intense
that they fill our minds with anxious thoughts, they refuse to let us sleep, and they torment our
souls for days on end.

“My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. Fear and trembling have
beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.” Psalm 55:4-5

It is during life’s most intense storms that some people will finally realize that they must take
shelter in something stronger than themselves or the remedies and distractions of the world. It is
during life’s darkest times that some people will finally humble themselves and call on the Lord for
refuge.

“Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be
merciful to me and hear my prayer.” Psalm 4:1

Only when we are threatened by the powerful storms of life, we have come to the end of
ourselves, and our dreams have possibly forsaken us do some of us finally seek the Lord and call
on him for refuge.

“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take
refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” Psalm 57:1

The decision to seek the Lord and take refuge in him is not just a desperate last resort for those
who are wrestling with hard times and overwhelmed with despair. Instead, those who seek the
Lord and learn to take refuge in him have begun a spiritual journey and they will ultimately discover
a lasting source of peace, strength, and hope that will not forsake them.

“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”
Psalm 34:8
